RE: The Iraq Analogy

Please show me where in Red Dawn:

[1] The Wolverines blow up women and children.

[2] Insist that everyone in the towns they control abide by Sharia.

[3] Use women and children as human shields.

Why don't you come over to Pajama Media. They're having a wonderful discussion on film critics there right now. Focusing, for the most part on critic's opinions of An American Carol. But I'm certain we could engage you on this as well.

I doubt that the author of the article meant the the Iraqi insurrectionists were the moral equivalent of the fictitious Wolverines it the "Red Dawn" situation as described. The tactics are of the Iraqi Resistance are more vicious.

What he meant was that the arising of the two resistance movements were equally inevitable, for one simple reason: It's human nature that if another country invades yours you fight the invaders any way you can.

I'm still amazed that our leaders didn't expect this when they ordered the invasion of Iraq (and before that the invasion of Viet Nam.) I think in the Iraq case it was the ideology of the neo-cons (America is entitled to pacify the world because it's the strongest and best country in the world.) that blinded Bush, et al., to the inevitable.

And then of course, we always think that our super weapons will always win.

I’m not the only one who came away with that impression.

Indeed they are.

RE: Your Understanding

You’re entitled to your understanding.

However, I find it interesting that you justify the murderous tactics of the Al Qaeda types in Iraq, i.e., ‘any way you can.’

The only super weapon I’m familiar with is the man on the ground with a rifle in his hands, a comm-link in his ear and a clever mind under his helmet.

[You may fly over a land forever; you may bomb it, atomize it, pulverize it and wipe it clean of life—but if you desire to defend it, protect it, and keep it for civilization, you must do this on the ground, the way the Roman legions did, by putting your young men into the mud. -- T.R.
