Throttle down, Top Gun...
by JMW
What a nut. Some movies are just--movies. Yes, liberating Iraq from a sociopathic tyrant is the same as the Soviets invading America--NOT. Geez, if Slate's this desperate for reviewers, drop me a note.

But you're looking at Iraq through a foreigner's eyes. To them, it wasn't liberation as much as occupation.

And then you have raids by US soldiers where they rough-up women and children, and what are the Iraqi men supposed to do.

If there's were a foreign invader in your house yelling at your wife, what would you do.

Oh thank you mister soldier do you want some tea?

Fuck no!

And you have to understand, also, that while Saddam was brutal to those who opposed him, the average Iraqi wasn't on his enemies list.

They lived their lives peacefully, wen't to work everyday, and came home without being blown-up or kidnapped, and then come the Americans...

You're driving to your parent's house, and they shoot your car up.

They knock your door down at 4AM because your cousing has a grudge against you.

Now you have to be worried about being a Sunni in a Shia neighborhood, and getting your head cut off for walking down the wrong street.

Thank you America!

What crack are you on? This was a terror state where everything was controlled by force. The only reason the two different sects werent shooting at each other before the invasion was that they knew Saddam would drive a tank through their house. Im not saying we should have invaded honestly every reason was a lie to invade and its been a cluster fuck ever since but dont bs us with them running around papa smurfs feet.

It's amazing how quickly Conservatives converted themselves from their anti-Nation Building stance to avidly pro-Nation Building as soon as it became clear that Saddam's relationship to the September 11 attacks were ephemeral.

It was the only cover story they had left for him.
