Overconfidence is Dangerous
by NorCal

I have been reading many posts from Obama supproters that make it sound like the election results are a foregone conclusion.

True, Obama has certainly hit his stride, and McCain seems to be faltering. Polls are swinging the Dems way.

But, just like in baseball, as the Cubs and the Angels learned, they cruised through the regular season, only to be shown the door when the game became more meaningful.

The end of the season is the time to take the game to the next level and put off claiming the prize until after the final results are in.

I have to agree with the tone of the posts, the latest polls and the mood of the country is encouraging, but the election is still almost a month away and the Republicans are attacking like never before. Negative campaigning works, we've seen its effectiveness on the electorate before, so we need to stay focused.

Its hard not to get excited about how the race is turning, however. My goal is to stay steady like the candidate I support. He has been stalwart in his campaign. But...

I am a little concerned that Obama has not responded to the Ayres charges, mainly because Kerry similarly thought responding to the obvious lies and hypocracy of the Swiftboat ads was beneath the campaign, and it turned out to be a huge mistake.

I cant help but think and hope that Obama must be prepared for this and has a plan waiting to be revealed at the proper moment. He has timed everthing so well. I think he is much smarter than Kerry, and has run a better campaign.

I pray for Obama and the monumental task he has ahead of him should he win this thing.

There are several ways of looking at this. On the one hand, it makes sense to suggest that the race is a tossup, right 'til the end. That helps avoid the overconfidence and complacency issues you describe. And..it helps to drive turnout.

On the other hand though...there is a relatively significant segment of the electorate - my anecdotal guess is that it's between 5% and 10% - whose vote is actually driven by who they perceive "everyone" else is voting for. This sounds a little civically pathetic, but it's a practical fact. And especially in a young newcomer like Obama's case, it's useful for some people to see that it's "okay" to vote for him. So...if the media is suggesting that Obama is pulling away - that news can serve to bring even more votes over to his side.

Obama = Karl Marx = Ayers = Wright = Rezko

Libs have sold their soul to Marxists, Terrorists, Crooks, and Anarchists.

Who would you rather have a beer with, Mandate?

Marx, Ayers, Wright, Rezko, or McDolt?

That because in every state that Obama leads, Acorn is being investigated for voter fraud. Thats where all the confidence comes from. Acorns working really hard to steal the election for Obama.
teigan, hint us specifically...

as to how the allegations against ACORN, assuming they're true, might lead to a stolen election. I betcha if you were to consider the actual allegations, you'd come a cropper.

I live in an extremely red section of California.

It has been considered unAmerican to reveal Dem leanings these last eight years.

In the last month, there are many dems coming out of their shell and openly supporting Obama.

For the first time ever, it has become OK to question or criticize Bush without immediate scorn or shout down.

McCain campaign signs still outnumber Obama signs 10 to 1, but that is far better numbers than me against the rest of my town.

I've been saying since 2004:

"Democrats need to turn out in overwhelming, tamperproof numbers this fall"

Or it could be because he depends on voters like this:

Now, now.

No crying about stolen elections.

You'll sound like those Floridians and Ohioans you scoffed at.

Hypocracy is unbecoming on you T.

Marxists AND Anarchists?

You need to relax a little.

Specifically they are registering the same people 40 to 50 times, they have a young man in Nevada that is willing to testify to that. He had informed them that they had already registered him and they kept telling him he could register again. They signed up the Dallas football team even though they are not in Nevada. They registered dead people.

Not that you would ever be concerned with this as long as they are working on behalf of Obama. I would be concerned no matter who their working for because I believe that the President should be chosen by the people, that would include the media as well, they should not be trying to choose the President except with their OWN individual vote.

But its fraud and steals the election from the American people.

ACORN should be banned from any further registrations and should never be allowed anywhere near an election.
Do you know how elections work?
by Trebuchet

Signing someone up 50 times would not change the fact that he could only vote once.

If someone tried to vote multiple times, the legal ramifications of getting caught could not possibly justify any attempt to do so.

Re: Overconfidence is Dangerous

Bullshit, the votes were recounted and recounted and recounded. And I can't help it if the people in Florida can't figure out how to vote. Hanging chads was a joke. Old people were being told that their votes weren't being counted, how the hell would anyone know who's vote is being counted? I just voted today because I'' always gone before voting day, now how do I know if my vote is going to be counted?

We use a paper ballot, fill in the circle next to who you are voting for, put it in an envelope, seal it, go to the counter put it in another envelope sign the envelope and hand it to the clerk. So easy a fifth grader could do it. Now if someone where to come to me and say did you know your vote didn't count, wouldn't I wonder how the hell they know?

ACORN is committing voter fraud and stealing the choice from the people. But you are fine with that. OK maybe I should now go out and start registering people 50 times and help them commit fraud so that I can get more votes for McCain, since its ok with you and all, I'll start today.

Ever try to track down a homeless guy? He could vote multiple times if he was registered in many different precincts.
The problem there though tiegan..is twofold.
by spreadsheet
First of all of course, you and the gop-shriekers have NO evidence of any homeless guy voting more than once, anywhere. And, it would've naive at best, to assume that there haven't been vast resources devoted to uncovering said homeless guy. And of course...we'd have to look to just what would motivate your hypothetical homeless guy to undertake such a felonious task. Of course...there's only one plausible motivation - that would be money. ACORN, or who whomever, would have to pay this guy to do these dirty deeds. And again...you haven't the slightest evidence to suggest they've done that. But...lets say they did...they paid some homeless dude what.....$50, $100, $10,000?..whatever. So....you don't think the gop-shriekers have been able to bribe a single one of these mythical homeless dudes to sing? I mean...we've already surmised that your homeless fellow will cast felonious votes for dough, dontcha think he'd be willing to double down?
