Obama helped total stranger 20 years ago
by simsan

If the final weeks of the campaign turns into a question of the "character" of the two candidates then I certainly hope that someone pays attention to this sweet story (<link>)

which was the biggest cover-story in this Saturday's edition of Norways largest newspaper VG.

English translation and comments are here:

Thanks for the link. It's important to note that Obama wasn't making much money then, and that was a big amount to spend on a stranger.

Some people feel the need to talk and talk about being a Christian, then there are those that quietly live those ideals day in and day out.

The Pentagon was bombed in 1972. Obama was 12 years old.

Did Obama peddle the getaway bicycle?

Wow, one un-fact-checked blog posted by a respected journalist named "foxsucks81" (Obamabot) on a completely neutral and trusted site like daily kos (propaganda central.) I guess Obama IS qualified to be president, with solid evidence like that! And if you believe that, I've got some really nice bridges for sale, cheap.

McCain spent years being tortured by professionals while fighting for America, fighting for your freedom (nevermind the failed politics of that war, which were never McCain's.) But I guess this Obama story is just as good.

Do any of them go somewhere? ;-)

As far as the fact-checking goes:
The norwegian newspaper VG that ran the story on Saturday, had this as their cover story. I have a copy of the print edition (since I'm Norwegian). Even though VG is a tabloid, it has a fairly strong reputation as far as journalistic credibility and fact checking is concerned. In the photo that accompanies the original story, you can see the lady displaying the official response her parents got from Senator Obama's office.

I believe it's a genuine story. In my view it's not a COMPLETE UNIQUE act of kindness. I actually think good deeds like this are being done by nice people around the world on a very regular basis. Still I think it says a lot a bout character that Obama is one (of the thousands of people) who have this sort of kindness inn him. Somehow I don't think you'll hear this kind of story about Sarah Palin :-)

you wont hear shes a racist, a friend of terrorists, and a hate monger either...

It wouldn't surprise me. I bought a gallon of milk for a lady that had a couple of kids and not enough money a bit ago in a gas station.

This story says he's a nice guy.

Doesn't tell me if he'd be a good President.

Racist:

Friend of terrorists:

Hate monger:
Okay, you got me there, I don't really know what the definition of a hatemonger is, but I imagine it can't be too far off her latest campaign speeches

I should mention- I don't believe the links above, but then I don't believe the smears about Obama, either, and to say that 'you wont hear' stuff like that about Palin, well, it's probably only because Obama is ahead in the polls.

Definitely true, bondsman.

Where is all this anger coming from?

Obama is a very decent and honorable man.

Actually I personally believe McCain to be a pretty honorable man too.

I'm not eligible to vote in this election (since I'm non-american). I'm just hoping that we can eventually have an intelligent and knowledgable person to "run the world". I like Obama's temper, and the fact that he seems capable of nuanced perspectives. Important issues seldom have clear-cut solutions.
