The person sitting next to me at the lunch counter started a conversation, which went something like this: He: "Boy, that Sarah Palin. She really showed them New York interlectuals, didn't she!" Me: "She's quite a woman,but I like Obama." He: "I could never vote for Obama. He's the most liberal man in the Senate!" Me: "That's interesting. I seem to remember Bush calling ... what's his name ... that guy Bush ran against. I thought he was the most liberal man in the Senate? What does "liberal" mean, anyway?" He: "I don't know, but whatever it is, Obama's it." Me: "Well, maybe so, but how to you know? It seems to me we shouldn't trust what one politician says about his oponent." He thought about that for a while, and then he came back with this irrefutable statement. "I could never vote for Obama. He's the most liberal man in the Senate!" And that's why McCain will win in November.

No signs in mine either, really... But I still hear the occasional snippet of conversation at work. Most of the time, I dont talk to them, i cant risk getting fired for a political argument in which I am sure I would call someone idiot as I am quite passionate about this election. I do see how the recent financial events would overshadow election discussions however. If only the information could be gathered to say "Its a conspiracy on the part of..." that way the election couldnt be just about one thing. Have you noticed that in the last few Presidential's? Its been withered down from the multitude of issues facing our nation to this or that one thing? I wonder why that is?

I spent a lot of time in Southwest Virginia and North Carolina over the past three weeks.

In 2004, both areas were plastered with Bush/Cheney stickers.

But the McCAin signs are conspicuous by their absence, except for a few in public rights of way (a common trick of poltical operatives to try and look like there are more supporters out there than there really are).

don't worry me come this Fall...they'll more then likely spoil their ballots or simply end up lost on their way to the ballot box.

It is smart not talk politics, religion, or money at work and it certainly isn't worth getting laid off, it will not change anything and the personal life gets hard to bear.

Guess that's why Palin was in Nebraska. Makin' sure the ignorance vote is locked up.

I wonder, is it possible for you to think beyond the slogans? The lives of people in Europe (yes, I've been there) are very much like the lives of people in America, busy and free. Their lives, and ours, are nothing at all like life in Fascist Italy, or Franco's Spain, or Hitler's Germany. Jews are not being herded into death camps. People who speak their minds, like you and me, aren't being beaten up by jackbooted brown shirts. You've got a slogan. Socialism is bad. It prevents you from thinking, It makes you say things that fly in the face of your own experience. And it prevents you from saying things that might have an influence on others, because people look at the world and see that what you say does not make sense. Some forms of socialism are bad -- not bad because they're socialism but bad because they don't work. Nationalization of industry is bad. The government and business need to be on opposite sides, each checking and balancing the other. But free lunches for schoolchildren is a form of socialism, and that isn't bad. If you can move beyond the slogans, you might be surprised at the thoughts you can think.
