It is an indefensible position to argue that Christianity does not have a long history of Patriarchy. It would also be close to indefensible, in my opinion, to believe the Scriptures are the literal word of God and NOT support Patriarchy. I say “close to” because I am amazed to what lengths some Christians will go to embrace modernity and cling to a literal biblical belief. “I know the Bible appears to be saying that but…”
In many Christian denominations women’s roles have expanded dramatically (including inclusion in the clergy) just during my lifetime. In others such as Evangelicals, not so much. Understanding the Fundamentalist mentality, and harkening back to my point of creative interpretation, this is my guess as to what the answer would be to Wren’s question:
Female Commander in Chief: Heaven Forbid!
Oh, did you mean “Republican” Commander in Chief? You know… Deborah was a Judge wasn’t she? In unusual times God does make exceptions. And…she doesn’t seem too prissy, does she!
You can build your whole justification right here: <Deborah for Commander in Chief>
You’d be wrong, but who cares…so long as you win, RIGHT?
