Alaska - Hawaii
by jack_cerf
The answer is short and simple. Alaska is as close as one can get these days to rural 19th century America, before the Ellis Island immigrants got here. Hawaii is the one state where people of European descent have never been the majority.

Why is Alaska closer to rural 19th century America than Wyoming or Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana. These states have very low populations and very low population densities. They are rural and not known for their big cities and are rather Protestant and Northern European in demography. Alaska has parts where the most common faith is Russian Orthodox because Russia used to hold sovereignty there. Alaska is not really good farming country either.

I'd also like to say that as a descendant of Ellis Island immigrants, I find it insulting that I'm less of an American than White Protestant Americans.
