how about something in between markfifteen? Maybe some healthcare, education (e.g. some government protection that doesn't involve the military). It's the governments job to improve the life for it's citizens, which means giving every one an equal chance to suceed. Which means free healthcare and education for all, and perhaps some protection from greedy capitalists (perhaps by a little govt regulation to avoid crises such as the current one). That's it, that's all. No waiting around the for government to "give us things," Just an equal chance for everyone to try to get things.

The job of the government is to provide for the common defense and to ensure that it's citizens are given equal protection under the law. It is not the governments job to provide "free" health care. Besides, what is this "free" foolishness, nothing is free... someone has to pay for it i.e. the taxpayer. The government runs our "free" public school system and look how well that is going. The government is supposed to watch over it's GSEs like Fannie Mae, look how well that is going. Now you want government to provide "free" health care? With the constant failure of government to do it's job no matter if it's republican of democrat controlled, it never ceases to amaze me that some people still want the govenment to run more of our lives.
