so many lies about PCs, so little time
by mike_in_nm

"In the 1970s and '80s, Apple created the first great personal computers."

That's B.S. One could claim the same thing about Commodore or IBM. One could argue that the Mac GUI was revolutionary. However, Xerox was simultaneously developing a similar interface. (Some accuse Jobs of stealing their interface for the Mac, which may or may not be true.)

"Your Windows computer crashes more often than your Mac computer because.."

More B.S. Windows computers don't crash more than Macs. I beg someone to show me real proof (not just anecdotal evidence) that's true.

" And why is your PC glutted with viruses and spyware?"

If that's true of your PC computer, you just aren't paying attention. A host of inexpensive and well developed applications are available to keep your computer free of viruses, etc.

Just because there aren't enough Macs in the world for hackers to bother writing viruses for does not make Macs better...

It would be nice if Manjoo could write an unbiased article that mentions Apple or Macintosh. His view of PCs consistently seems to imply that PC users are clueless dipshits for using anything other than an Apple. I find this insulting and annoying.

Actually, Woz created the first PC with a Keyboard, Color Monitor, Floppy Drive and Steve Jobs created the first PC with a "case" so it's safe to say Apple was the first great PC.

Xerox had some good ideas taken from SRI, but it took Apple to bring them to the world. Today, everyone uses the Mac OS, not the Xerox one when you think about it.

No, I use several platforms and Windows still crashes far more than Macs or Linux. Windows is weak since it still doesn't use Unix, so until that changes Windows will be the more unstable system.

NO! Windows is full of viruses simply because it was NEVER designed to be on world wide networks. OSX and Linux were that's why you'll never see wide outbreaks of Viruses on Apple machines. The entire STRUCTURE of UNIX is entirely different to Windows, that's the problem to why Windows can't ever be secure.

It has NOTHING to do with marketshare, that's just an excuse for a poor Microsoft OS. Apple will put online over 2.8 MILLION machines over the last 90 days, and NONE will get a Virus. That's just high quality computing, and an OS that is impervious to such immature network & OS errors that Windows faces.

Yes, PC users are well known to be clueless dipshits since they don't understand better alternatives than running the very propreitary Windows operating system.

Someday everyone will use the much more OPEN OSX system, but there are still a lot of people that are ignorant on how computers operate.

OSX is simply far more battle tested than Windows, so let's leave it at that.

Don't worry! Someday you'll move up to a Mac too... but in the mean time, please keep your ignorance to a minimum.

Like I said, "no anecdotal evidence" please. Forgive me for not taking someone who is so biased at their word regarding the relative stability of Windows vs. Mac. You can't show me evidence that what you say is true because its not.

"Xerox had some good ideas taken from SRI, but it took Apple to bring them to the world. Today, everyone uses the Mac OS, not the Xerox one when you think about it." OK, so Apple brought the GUI to the market first. That doesn't make it better, it just makes it first. Plus, they stole it from PARC and Xerox.

The idea that XP or Vista wasn't developed to be on the internet is just plain absurd. Of course, earlier versions weren't. But, that's true of OSX too.

Mac OS is about as far from Unix as one can get.

Someday, probably in the next 5 years, Apple will go out of the computer business. The iPod saved it from bankruptcy. Unless the next iPod comes along, it wont be long.

Forgive me for not using Linux, I have actual work to get done.

Enjoy your koolaid

I agree -- especially since for every claim that Windows crashes & Macs/Linux doesn't, there are plenty of Windows users with brains that manage to avoid being infected for years on end. I can say that my ex's Macs crashed way MORE than my same-age systems while trying to do the same things -- and as a newbie Linux (Kubuntu/Ubuntu) user of 2 months, I can say the apps & system itself have been crashing more than XP by a long shot; it reminds me frustratingly of Win98se.

No, OSX is based on FreeBSD so it's been on networks since the early 70's. The world wide web started on OSX (NeXTSTEP it was called back then) so it has a far longer history since it's what the internet runs on, not Windows.

And no, NT, XP, Vista are based on VMS which was an internal corporate OS, never designed for networks.

Actually, OSX is a fully certified UNIX, while Linux is not. So yes, OSX is about as close to UNIX as you can get. It's 95% opensource which is nice too.

No, Apple was never close to bankruptcy that was just a urban myth... but yes, they were mismanaged during the mid 90's which allowed Windows to start to catch up. The "iMac" is what made Apple very rich again, not the iPod... that success came much later.

And no, Apple is the 3rd largest PC vendor so there is simply no way they'd ever stop making great hardware. Hardware AND Software is their focus, since you can make near perfect machines without control over both aspects. Look at the mess of Windows and Linux and you'll agree nobody wants to repeat that mistake!

And lastly, Apple now has more cash than Microsoft and will surpass them in overall value in 18 months... all because Apple focuses on building great products for people who want the very best in their lives.

"OS11", you're so full of shit you probably have dandelions springing from your armpits. I don't have time for all your weak propaganda and fantasies, but I'd love to address one thing real quick. You said:

LOL. Ok, chuckles--look of "Sega of Japan" and get back to us. Tell us again how even large hardware manufacturers can never fail. Go ahead, droid.
