Master W. H. & the Rival Poet

Another excellent article, but slightly misrepresenting my TLS piece about Master W. H. - I wasn't proposing that Master William Herbert of Glamorgan REALLY WAS the lovely boy, but rather that the fact that you can make as convincing argument for him as opposed to William Herbert Earl of Pembroke is a problem for the case for the latter, which now has such widespread support. The piece was a deliberate canard, an offcut from my new Shakespeare book (out in the UK in a couple of weeks, but, alas, US readers will h ave to wait till spring)... in which I'll propose a new solution (which I really do believe) as to why Davies's Lover's Complaint was published with Shakespeare's sonnets...
