Smart move.

Its a great political move for two reasons.

1. It shows that Obama has no interest in having anything to do with his job of Senator. He would rather just attempt to achieve the ultimate personal gain, and will not stop his campaign even if it might help America.

2. Obama obviously isn't into working within the Senate to create any sort of bi-partisan deals. He would rather let other people do the real work, he comes across as being a man of inaction rather than action.

Obama looks bad. McCain looks slightly better.

McCain's cancelation is pure gimmickry and no one will buy it. McCain is not on any financial or banking committee. He's just showboating and will only get in the way.

We'll see tomorrow, won't we?

The false bravado of the Obama camp amazes me.

If McCain was tanking in the polls before canceling the debate, this could turn into a rout for him. The American people are smart enough not to fall for this. You'll see.

Really? Virtually all the coverage and internet commentary I've seen slams McCain. It's not as if the man has anything constructive to add to the discussions -- he doesn't really know much about finance or financial regulation, as he's amply demonstrated over the last week or so. And in fact, much better qualified folks than he have been in the thick of trying to figure this out. What in the world is he going to add to the discussion? In the meantime, we draw ever closer to the election. Note, campaigns continued in the midst of the Civil War, First World War, Depression, and Second World War. Why should anybody believe that McCain is essential to this discussion? And, as David Letterman pointed out, if McCain is actually needed (something McCain himself appears to doubt, since he wandered off to Katie Couric instead), why isn't Palin stepping in?

thdcnx, you really nailed it. Palin's role is to step in as #2. Obviously, she's not qualified to do that today, so McCain is suspending the campaign. Good thing he's not actually the President, isn't it.

I agree Madame Defarge, however anything either side has done for the last year and a half has been nothing but Gimmick. Obama and his 'race' speech, after making it clear how he felt about rural whites in a closed door San Francisco speech calling rural whites racists who cling to guns and god. Remember, it wasn't a brave comment, he said it only because he was Naive enough to believe that what he said would not leave that room. As for McCain, well duh its just a gimmick, but people will buy it, just like they buy "hope and change" a complete and total gimmick by a man who believes in the same crippled democratic party platform that has been in service for well over half a century.

mberryjordan, meh, I don't buy it myself, but I think a lot of people will, especially those that don't follow politics, but vote because they believe it is their duty will be surprised by this.
