Go ahead and lie, it's the only option left.

Dear democrats,
It doesn't matter any more. Go ahead and say whatever you like. The truth is inconsequential at this point. There is less than two months left in this election and not enough time for the truth. If the republicans win do you want to know how they will do it? It's not the lying, that's too simple an explanation, it's the speed with which they lie. Yesterday everyone started out talking about education, by the end of the day they were talking about Iraq. Today everyone is talking about pigs. By the end of today we'll probably be talking about the economy. It all moves too quickly. By the time someone has uncovered the lies about the previous issue we are on to the next one. The republicans know that the truth lags far enough behind the lies that, by the time it comes out, the average person, who doesn't have the time to read news all day long, is eye-balling some other issue, or working or trying to spend time with their kids. We all know that the bridge to nowhere claim is a lie, but do you really think that more than maybe 25% of americans listened to the debunking of that claim? No, they didn't. So it works. And so the republicans keep doing it, because they know they can get away with it.
The democrats try to be more principled about this than the republicans, they try just a little harder to keep things clean. That's why they lose. What the democrats fail to understand is that you can't really de-swiftboat someone. Once it's out there, it's out there and a certain number of people will believe it. And the republicans know that it's a lier's market, that you can keep selling the electorate new and exciting lies every day. There is no such thing as too much disinformation about your opponent. Not everyone will believe he's a muslim, but enough will. And not everyone will believe he's going to raise everyones taxes, but enough will. And so on and so on, until enough people believe enough untruths about him that the republicans win.
So you have a choice. You can either damm the principles, say whatever the hell you want about McCain and hope that it sticks, you can play their game or you can lay there and watch the republicans waltz into office, using whatever tactic they have to to ensure they get in. There is just no other way of doing it.
My one hope was that it would come down to the debates and Obama would trounce McCain. I now realize that what happens in the real world is insignificant, that McCain could lose the debates and still win, merely by saying often enough and loudly enough that he won.
