McCain doesn't want to ban abortions
by Ripley
McCain does not want a constitutional amendment banning abortion, he has made himself very clear on that. He would, if possible, overturn Roe v Wade & send the issue back to the states, but for the most part he has offered no legislation, or even suggested he would offer any such legislation if he becomes President. He calls himself "pro-life" because it is politically expedient, and maybe he's even personally down on abortions, but it is not and never has been a big issue for him. That's why the more fundamentalist Republicans, like Dobson, wouldn't endorse him. You know this, William, what are you trying to do?

There was a great article in the New Republic that covered McCain's voting record on abortion, and concluded that the anomalous stance was his tolerance of abortion - that in truth he is very much anti-abortion. Here's the link if you're interested.

Who's that white-haired guy who snuck onto the ABC set and told Stephanopoulos he favors a ban amendment? Follow the links from the piece through Media Matters. They have the video.

Well I read the article, honestly it didn't change my opinion. He has always said this is a matter to be decided by individual States, so his statements on Supreme Court nominees is consistent with his stance. And as the article mentioned, he was crushed in 2000 over his view that a constitutional amendment banning abortions was wrong. So I understand he's being more careful with what he has said. Sure, personally he's against abortions. Lots of pro-choice people say they would never get an abortion themselves. I am the opposite - a vehemently pro-life person who won't try to get Roe overturned, because I'm a pragmantist. I know it won't happen. I believe McCain is also a pragmatist.

Did you watch the media matters video?

If not, then you're willingly keeping yourself in denial about McCain's position...

During the 2000 primary, McCain also said he supported a constitutional amendment to ban abortion. On the January 30, 2000, edition of NBC's Meet the Press (retrieved from Nexis), host Tim Russert said to McCain: "A constitutional amendment to ban all abortions?" McCain replied: "Yes, sir." Russert then said: "You're for that?" McCain responded: "Yes, sir."
