A way to keep track of bandwith used?
by KB01

I have no problem with internet providers limiting the amount of bandwith each customer can use in a month. However, they should provide a simple and accessible way for customers to keep track of how much is used at any given time.

I use the internet for everything from my telephone to watching movies on my Netflix Roku. I honestly don't know how much bandwith I actually use. In addition, it seems like my computer is constantly downloading OS, virus software, and other software updates. My Tivo also downloads TV listings each day and I buy a lot of music downloads off of iTunes and Amazon. Plus, I do a lot of web browsing. Come to think of it, virtually every time I turn my computer on, some component wants to download an update.

How many gigs a month do I use? I don't have the slightest idea.

My biggest fear is that internet providers will ultimately cap bandwith and then charge hefty overage fees, yet provide no way of knowing when you're over. Kind of like Prodigy or CompuServ subscribers in the early 90's when they went over their allotment, or long distance subscribers with no real way to monitor their *actual* usage (because they always rounded up to the next minute).

I've had cable TV since the late 80's and the one thing I've learned, is that they aren't straightforward with anything and have a business model that's based on nickel and diming their customers.
