WASHINGTON (AFP) — US unemployment jumped to a five-year high of 6.1 percent as 84,000 jobs were slashed in August, according to data released Friday which analysts said highlights recession-like conditions.

The Labor Department report -- considered one of the best indicators of economic momentum -- marked the eighth consecutive month of shrinking nonfarm payrolls, and was worse than expected by private economists.

Wall Street analysts had expected a loss of 75,000 jobs and a steady unemployment rate of 5.7 percent for the month.

The agency also revised its figures from the prior two months to show a loss of 60,000 positions in July and 100,000 in June, up from earlier estimates of a drop of 51,000 in each of the two months.

The latest figures show a cumulative loss of 605,000 US jobs since the start of 2008, highlighting the woes of the world's largest economy from a horrific housing slump and credit squeeze....

Seems that puts you on the list of nay-sayers...

Please explain the reason for the increase in sales for items that No one really has a big need for...

Not food, not gas, but farm toys and antique glassware and cottector's junk is what I sell...

I'm sure the need for that stuff is great... What say you...?

Can you say

I presented facts as well. You have a single experience; the story reports a broad experience.

During the Great Depression my grandfather, a carpenter for a bell foundry, and his brother, a Baltimore Police Sargeant, kept their jobs. They both did quite well and had pretty nice houses. Their families never suffered, even though the country was.

One person's experience does not tell the tale... the lost jobs, the increasing unemployment figures, collapsing mortgage business all speak of a poor economy...but you....you know better.

And...to continue from yesterday...please cite the Constitutional Article that speaks to political parties and their conventions...

From yesterday...? >link< please

I think you are a little mixed-up in your emotional exuberance... maybe you were talking with whom?

Maybe the Free speech clause would cover it... It covers the world... Kinda like the paint advertisement... ya know?

the facts... I presented DIrectly link to the economy

If the economy is as BAD as you Dems would have us believe... I would sell nothing at all...because what I sell is not even in the slightest degree something that could be called a necessity.

And anyone with any intelligence knows that people in hard times don't buy things that are not needed... My guess is that the intelligence thingy, very likely leaves you out... huh?

The BAD economy thing is a very convenient thing to keep going for you Dems because their are dumbDonkeys like you who believe anything they are told by the Dem establishment...

Of course, MAYbe only Republicans who work and thus make money are the only people who showed up at the Old Engine Show this year... There that gives you an out... yes/no?

Perhaps you should be CEO of a major bank or retailer, as their view of the economy is at odds with yours. Inflation is sucking the life out of the economy and will continue as long as Americans want more government than they are willing to pay for, which will be at least a couple more years.

Government figures...not "Dems"...

yet another perfect example of the right's inability to see beyond their pocketbook.

Yes...people DO by trinkets and useless other things during hard times....because some people still have money. That was the entire point of my post to you....showing that even during the depression there were folks with money.

Fascinating though...as you did manage to insult working people, Democrats and me all in one post.

That's excellent Republican talent!!!
