In an attempt to brand Gov. Palin as a hypocrite, Mr. Noah managed to find some convenient statistics at the Census Bureau about significantly higher fed spending per capita in AK vs. various states.
Answer: Well, Duh! Anyone who knows anything about Alaska at all would find this piece laughable. But then again, how could Tim know something about a place not served by Acela.
I submit two websites Noah conveniently overlooked:
<link>
and
U.S. Census Compendium of Public Employment
The first clearly shows how Alaska is overwhelmingly federal lands - a crazy quilt of myriad federal departments and branches of military, not to mention the great majority of U.S. coastline in the U.S. The map clealry shows how urban areas in Alaska are basically islands in a sea of federal protection and ownership.
The second link, if one is brave enough to open the .pdf and hunt, clealry shows Alaska's FEDERAL EMPLOYMENT per 10,000 population is bested only by D.C. and Virginia.
So let's sum up - Alaska is an ocean of federal land ownership, leases, regulations, restrictions, etc. with islands of private ownership. The vast majority of private enterprise in AK is strongly affected by and, frankly, hindered by the Feds - greatly natural resources - or reliant on the Feds for infrastructure due the great distances between the urbanized islands. And then again, if you're publicly employed, chances are Uncle Sam is your boss.
Please, Tim, do your homework before gloating. Alaska secede? Ha! Alaska couldn't afford to pay the rent.
