Anybody wanna talk about Palin's ties to the AIP?
by SoreLoser

Alaska Independence Party. Her hubby was a member and she spoke at their convention.

These people are more than a little screwy.

Sarah Palin and the Alaskan Independence Party
by RCH1

In the mid-1990s, the Alaskan Independence Party was experiencing a boom of sorts. A governor had been elected on its ticket in 1990, when the party was not even a decade old. And membership was swelling.

As Mayor of Wasilia, Sarah Palin attended the party’s convention in their hometown in 1994. Palin remained a Republican and never joined the Alaskan Independence Party, but returned to its convention in 2006 to speak as candidate for governor.

On Tuesday, the AIP chairwoman, Lynette Clark, said the earlier statement about Sarah Palin being a member was false. Ms. Clark said that she had based it on information another party member had given her, but that a review of the records showed only that Ms. Palin had attended the 1994 conference.

Ms. Clark said she interpreted Ms. Palin’s attendance at the 1994 convention as reflecting an interest in hearing a variety of perspectives. “Her heart is very Alaskan,” she said, “and we have Alaskan issues.”

I didn't say that Sarah Palin was a member. I said her husband was. "Todd Palin was a member of the AIP from 1995 to 2002, with the exception of a short period in 2000 when he was undeclared."

But her ties seem to go beyond that--

"And in 2008, as governor, she submitted a welcoming video to the AIP convention in Fairbanks. 'Your party plays an important role in our state's politics...'"

And here's another quote for you:

"The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government. ... And I won't be buried under their damn flag." -Joe Vogler founder of the Alaskan Independance Party.

Why?

Anybody want to talk about Barack Obama's association with William Ayers? You know, the guy who set off bombs at the Pentagon and the Capitol.

I didn't think so.

Go ahead and talk about it, JackOff. Talk all you want. Such bullshit and lies are right up your ally. Typical Republican crap. Here, this might help you get started.

JackAss, you were a liar when you first came on the board and you are a liar today. You might think it is funny to lie but it just shows your lack of class and lack of integrety.

I'd put Palin's AIP association and her wacky religious affiliates roughly in line with Obama's association with Wright's church and his friendship witha former Weather Underground member. In neither case should it be a disqualification, but in both cases it raises legitimate questions about their judgment and values. But where Obama was grilled fairly aggressively by the mainstream media on those topics, I expect Palin to get mostly a free ride on them.
Sorry Arkady - BUT . . .

Which "association" with the Alaskan Independence Party (AIP) would that be ? I thik I cleared that up in a previous post in this thread ? And you do recognize that the AIP is the third largest political party in Alaska - and even elected Walter Joseph Hickel as Governor in 1990 ? You think that equates to the Weather Underground ?

As far as her "wacky" religion - you mean the Pentecostals like the Assemblies of God, which has more than 12,000 churches in the U.S. ? Liking of disliking someones religious beliefs is hardly reason to begin calling them names - not very "Christian".

I'm not a Christian.

As for the size of the AIP, that doesn't change the fact their organizing principle is extremely radical, politically. I don't have a huge problem with that (I wouldn't mind seeing the Northeast seceed from the Union, after all), but it is the kind of thing I'd expect more scrutiny of if it had been Obama.

No ? - but many American voters ARE. I doubt any politician in America could take the stance that they are opposed to Christian ideals and expect to get any significant portion of the vote. Clearly you should run for political office outside of Boston.

And perhaps you would explain to me again exactly what Sarah Palin's relationship to the AIP is ?

I've already done that for you, Ron. <link>

But she has repeatedly reached out to the group. The McCain campaign has confirmed she visited the group's 2000 convention, and she addressed its convention this year, as an incumbent governor whose oath of office includes upholding the Constitution of the United States.

What are "Christian ideals"? If one looks to the Bible, Christian ideals include the ideal that we should sell all our possessions and give the money to charity, if we want to get to Heaven. Another Christian ideal is that if someone steals something from you, you're supposed to simply offer him something else of yours, too, and if someone strikes you, you're supposed to simply let him strike you again. Another is that you should avoid any profane activities on the Sabbath (e.g., watching football). If any poltician pushed such Christian ideals, I don't think most Americans would like that, either. Instead, what Christians mean when they talk about Christian ideals is the same thing Jews are talking about with Jewish ideals, Muslims are talking about with Muslim ideals, and atheists are talking about with secular humanist ideals. It's simply an arrogant way of asserting your faction's ownership over the universal ideals of moral treatment of other human beings.

As for Palin, she attended AIP's convention.

that the third largest party in Alaska is "unconstitutional"? Gee - the Governor sent a Video to the 2008 AIP convention wishing the AIP "good luck on a successful and inspiring convention." and actually WENT to the Convention, I understand, to seek their support when she ran as a Republican for Governor.
