Rut roh! Michelle Obama was a "key figure" behind an initiative at the University of Chicago Medical Center to steer away the uninsured from their emergency room.

So she's guilty of being a smart hospital manager? Newsflash: hospitals have been trying to do this for a long time. Uninsured visits to ERs cost billions per year that are made up for in raising all of our healthcare costs. Most of these visits are not emergencies, they don't have primary care docs or can't afford the visits, so all hospitals try to cut down on them.

If you had actually read the article you would know that Michelle Obama lead a highly successful effort to direct non emergency health cases away from the ER (which is the most expensive and least efficient method of dealing with such cases) and to local area clinics which were designed to provide the kind of care and follow up that the ER could not. It is ironic that conservatives who oppose universal health care and claim to hate waste would attack on this issue. I applaud Obama for this.
