Obama's smear machine too stupid to get out of it's own way

Well, here is a classic example of how stupid the Obama campaign and the Obama supporters are. They have been so thoroughly out maneuvered, it's rather amusing.

First, the McCain campaign knew about the Bristol's pregnancy and said nothing "because it was a private family matter."

Second, key Obama supporters like Alan Colmes and Andrew Sullivan spread a vicious rumor that Bristol was actually Trig's mom and not Palin. Please! Like anyone in modern politics would be stupid enough to try and hide that. Look what happened to Edwards. Of course, that was easily proven false, but it sure didn't stop Obama supporters from trying to spread that rumor as fast as they possibly could.

Third, the Obama camp broke the story of Bristol's pregnancy to a country already sickened by the earlier story. So, it made Obama's team look mean and petty.

Fourth, Obama had to come out and state that children were off the table, making Palin look very sympathetic. I give Obama the points for being classy, but too little, too late. His supporters and surrogates have already made him look Rovian.

Fifth, it's starts to give those Clinton supporters who might still be sitting on the fence, reminders of the attacks on Chelsea (a different story, since Chelsea is an adult and was campaigning for her mom - but still ugly). Every time the Obama smear machine goes into action against Palin, it just reminds the Clinton voters what was done to Clinton and reminds them of the misogyny heaped upon her. Since all McCain needs is for 10% of her voters to stay home or only 5% to vote for him, these attacks are doing more harm then good for Obama.

Sixth, you guys seem to have temporarily forgotten that Obama's mother got pregnant when she was 17. So, now there is the hypocrisy charge.

Brilliantly played by McCain camp. They knew you guys would leap on Bristol's pregnancy like raw meat to a cougar. They knew you couldn't resist. By remaining calm and simply saying, "Yes, we know. But it's a personal family matter." And then to have the Palin family to reaffirm their unconditional love for their daughter, it all made the Obama supporters look mean and petty and childish. By extension, that made Obama look mean and petty and childish - real Presidential.

Thank you for reminding me of when my daughter was a little girl. Her last words to me every night were, "Daddy, I like fairy tales. Tell me another."

1. This is very, very doubtful. It is far more likely that the Palins did not tell McCain that Bristol is pregnant. Lord knows, the McCain campaign did not ask. If this had been an prepared issue, even a private one, the roll out would have been very different. Verdict -- Palin has already betrayed McCain's trust -- four days into their relationship.

2. The evidence of Trig's parenthood is still confusing -- as is the hamhanded coverup by Palin (removing the photos from the governor site, etc.). I am inclined to think that Palin was trying to keep her daughter's current pregnancy secret -- but her attempt to do so was so inept that it lead to rumors even more damaging than the truth, forcing the truth to be revealed in a clumsy way.

3. The Obama camp did not break the story of Bristol's pregnancy. The McCain camp broke it to refute the story that Trig is Bristol's son. They say -- how can Bristol have a four month old child if she is five months pregnant? Well -- the math works -- but the story is still, well, National Enquirer meets Lifetime. It is not where the McCain campaign wants to be.

4. So -- Obama is better than Rove, and better than his own supporters (myself included) -- and somehow this hurts him? I don't get it. By that standard -- a vote for McCain would be a vote for Guggah. I mean -- do you really want to go there?

5. Let's see -- McCain calls Chelsea ugly. (He did not say the attacks on her were ugly -- that would be OK; he said SHE is ugly.) SO -- McCain calls Chelsea ugly, and that somehow is supposed to appeal to Clinton voters? Breathe, man, you are suffering from severe oxygen deprivation or something.

6. Obama's mother was not a national leader of the abstinence movement. Obama's mother was a free spirit -- a woman of her times. In other words, anyone who knew Ann Soetoro can say "I knew Ann Soetoro; Ann Soetoro was a friend of mine; and Sarah Palin is no Ann Soetoro." The hypocrisy is not in getting pregnant as a teenager -- the hypocrisy is in supporting abstinence only policies even though they don't work and even though they result in girls, like Bristol Palin, getting payment. As Obama said, we might not all agree on abortion -- but we can all agree on preventing teen pregnancy (or, at least, that should be a point on which we all agree ... perhaps McCain, in a misguided attempt to distance himself from Obama, was trying for the pro-teen-pregnancy vote).

So -- most of the claims regarding Sarah Palin being a bad mother have not come from men -- they have come from mothers. Men, at the moment, tend to like Sarah Palin. She is a beauty -- and men, at least initially, are inclined to give beauties the benefit of the doubt. Women are less inclined to do so -- judging other women on their actions -- and most of these women have not been impressed by Sarah Palin's reckless travel while in labor and neglect of her special needs child, foisting the child off on a teenage daughter, afterwards.

So, McCain, true to his rash inclination to fly by the seat of his pants, chose a veep without vetting her. All hell breaks loose when she proves to have more problems than any of the celebrities in the "Biggest Celebrity in the World" ad. She has been on the national stage for four days (four days!) -- and already she has turned McCain into an old goat and his campaign into a joke.

If this was "brillantly played" why is it blowing up now at the start of the Republican Convention? The timing couldn't be worse.

Well, even if McCain and his team did not know, the fact is that this event has shown many of us the kind of bastards that many many Obamaborgs are. There might be exceptions, but the majority of this mob love to hate others.

Why do McCain supporters blame Obama supporters for this unveiled information? Who loves to hate others? This is a legitimate story that was bound to come out sooner or later. If Joe Biden had a 17 year old daughter who was unwed and 5 months pregnant, would Rush Limbaugh leave that alone? No, it would immediately be a reflection of how godless liberals are.

I'm not suggesting that's how Obama's supporters feel here, either. I don't think that is how legitimate supporters feel. But this is a reflection on John McCain (nice job vetting a very young candidate, that really gives me confidence on how he'll handle truly important situations), and Sarah Palin (way to support abstinence only programs, here's a real-world example of how well they work).

A campaign is the largest thing McCain has ever run. It is his audition for the presidency. This does not inspire faith, unless you're a crazy evangelical who feels that the only two things that matter in the whole world are stopping abortion and keeping gays from marrying.

Toward the end of Bill Clinton's presidency, Chelsea was photographed kissing a young man at a nightclub in England. The New York Post headline was: "Bill & Hill Can't Tame Out-Of-Control Chelsea."

Republicans are rallying around her like crazy. Women are disgusted with the attacks on her and her 17 year old daughter. The Obama supporters were salivating so hard over any dirt to smear Palin, that they didn't think this through. Did none of you guys ever read Machievelli?

Hey Niko! If no one has told you, you do not get pregnant by kissing.

Well, that was kind'a my point. Maybe it was lost on you?

I deleted my "frothing screed" because I wanted to add to it and fix a typo. I then reposted it. It was really not that frothing, nor that much of a screed. Go read it -- it is up.

That said, is that all? You don't respond to my substantive, point-by-point rebuttal. To plagiarize your phrase, how convenient.
