In response to some of the blogs below, it’s a known fact that McCain broke down under torture. It’s in his biography and he has nothing to be ashamed of.
Just about all of us human beings will break down under torture. The universal response to torture is to say whatever the interrogator/torturer wants to hear. Even when the victim doesn’t know anything so has no information to give. I respected McCain for a long time because he did try to work with other legislators to stop the Bush policy of torturing suspects. I and others assumed he was particularly well placed through his experience as a victim of torture to know that 1. Torture dehumanizes and shames us all and 2. It’s a totally ineffective method to get credible information.
But McCain has done a switcharoo on us, just like he just did with the question of experience of his pick for VP, not to mention that of giving huge tax breaks for the wealthiest 5 % of Americans which he opposed in the past but now advocates. He now supports the torture policies (yeah, I know, Dubya keeps on saying "we don’t torture" but there’s now a mountain of evidence that we do and we actually use the Chinese Communists methods to do so) and opposes the new GI bill to give some relief and a future to his fellow veterans of the younger generations returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
I don’t know what happened inside McCain’s head these last couple of years, but whatever it is I would be worried if he became president of the US.
