I agree.
I am in the performing arts. We spend a LOT of time looking for things that are wrong and can be improved. To an outsider, we would seem like a very negative lot. On stage, we present an almost flawless production, made possible only because we relentlessly pursued it. We always challenge ourselves to find better ways of doing things. We often question the very approach we use.
I am tired of the opinion that Americans are superior to the world and the only ones who have anything to offer. I'm tired of the mantra that we are perfect in everything we do and have an inalienable right to as much stuff as we can borrow money for. There is a lot about this country, and about us, that doesn't just need improving, but is embarrassingly misguided. We are a collection of tremendous extremes and our capacity for damage and folly is as open as our ability to imagine and do quite remarkable things.
I want a president who understands some of this. In a world of finite resources the world needs to see us begin to behave differently. In a world of volatile emotions and beliefs and filled with terrible weapons, the world needs to see us behave differently.
We need to rehearse more!
I don't really know if Obama will move in any of these directions, but he is the only one out there who evens talks as if it's possible. The last 8 years under Bush have been a national nightmare, and, for me, only a visionery, smart, articulate, and different sort of politician will do to counter that. I'll take the chance with him. He has my vote.
