apple's always been a secretive company

This isn't real news. Apple has always been a company of secrets. Since the advent of the Apple IIE, the company has always tightly controlled every aspect of the products it produces. By way of comparison, IBM opened up its technology to the rest of the industry, which is why PCs have historically been much cheaper than macs.
The most recent example of this situation occurring is the fight between apple and Sun over Java. Up until very recently, Java 6 was not even available for the mac. Apple refused to let Sun release Java 6 code for macs because the code would not be "apple-certified". This caused a huge concern for java developers, who repeatedly asked apple to explain what they were doing about the situations. As usual, apple didn't bother to address these developers concerns. Almost two years after Java 6 update 1 (update 10 is the standard on other systems) was released, apple finally released update 1 for 64 bit macs only. Meanwhile, Java 7 will be running on every other OS in less than a year.
Apple products work great when there aren't any problems. Because these products are so proprietary, few problems generally occur. However, when problems do occur, don't expect apple to answer any of your questions.
