Regarding porno-watching dad
by artistic1979

All moral arguments aside, one thing I have not seen anyone point out about looking at porn on the computer is that that is a prime way to completely mess up your computer with viruses and spyware.

The reason I know this is because my husband works all day every day fixing computers for people who look at porn and mess up their systems. As he likes to say "If you go to a red light district, don't be surprised if you get mugged. It's no different when you are online."

HaHa!!! That is soooo true!! My boyfriend and Dad have to do the same thing! But hey, the silver lining is that they get to make some money off them! =)

eh ? Why couldn't he just format the hard drive ? As far as i know, you don't normally need to buy another drive unless it's physically damaged.

Fortunately my husband is an IT guy so that's not a worry for us!
Sexually transmitted computer disease
by gshenaut
Why are nasty pathogens so likely to take advantage of sexual activity? I guess it gives them an entré to the body via tissues that are normally protected. On the whole, it shouldn't be surprising that computer-based pathogens take advantage of the same pscyho-biological loopholes as, for example, Treponema pallidum. On the other hand, it's fairly amazing that porn consumers so often don't understand that the concept of "safe sex" also applies to the Internet, for example, following standard safety rules such as not downloading things from untrusted sites, using things like firewalls and proxies, and not using Microsoft Windows.

It was so effed up, there was nothing he could do. He couldn't reformat, he couldn't reload the original factory software, he couldn't even get it to shut off unless he actually unplugged it from the wall.

That makes absolutely no sense. That cannot possibly be the result of browsing or any kind of virus. It is physically impossible for internet porn to actually destroy your computer or even hard drive.

Sounds like you were grifted.

although i dont surf for porn

i can tell you from personal experience that of the sites i do visit, drudge report has (by far) the highest incidence of popups, which are closely related to viruses

Perhaps the computer looked at so much porn it became self-aware, like SkyNet and then never wanted to shut off because it wanted to dowload videos from LittlePeopleLesbianAmputees.com forever and ever?

Which is why my hubby is not allowed to look up porn on my laptop. If he screws up his own, fine by me, but no touchy mine. :) I may not have a say in what he looks at when he jerks off but I do have a say in what happens to my laptop.

As a computer geek I agree with the poster above... if you have to buy a whole new computer because of bugs and virus' and porn (oh my) then you've been taken. In 20 years of tech I've only lost 2 hard drives to bugs. The good ole Monkey B of 8 years or so did quite a number on re-writing the sectors on a hard drive. Yet the drive itself was NOT physically damaged... boot with a boot disk and reformat and voila.. all better. Well... you've lost all your data, but you should never have to buy a new computer in this scenario.

As far as the original letter writer goes. Unless their computer was effed up from his porn surfing it isn't possible for it to just "pop -up" while trying to watch a DVD. She really had to be looking for it.

If he did infect the computer with his porn surfing he should be apologizing about that more than the actual porn watching itself! I personally charge $100 to clean up and secure a machine after a nasty infection... $200 if I have to re-install the entire system. Another $25 gets you a one on one tutorial for keeping your computer safe. :) Many techs charge much much more... with a new baby in the house that's an expense they really don't need.

Admitting to surfing Drudge is somehow less embarrassing? ;-)

I've been told that song-lyric sites also tend to be notoriously malware-laden.
