So the rightwing commentariat is huffing and puffing and thumpin' their chests over the possibilty of McCain choosing a pro-choice running mate. Who do they think they're kidding?
After the results were in on Super Tuesday, the rightwing commentariat pleaded with Romney not to drop out of the race. When he withdrew from the race the next day,the rightwing commentariat huffed and puffed and thumped their chests and proclaimed that a McCain victory in the general election would "destroy the Republican party". This went on until the NY Times published a story about a possible McCain affair with a female lobbyist. The rightwing commentariat used that as political cover to roll over and get on board with McCain. All the while McCain was schmoozing the "evil","agents of intolerance" in the evangelical right and one by one they've rolled over and gotten on board with McCain too.
Now McCain has floated the idea of a pro-choice running mate and the rightwing commentariat is once again huffing and puffing and thumpin' their chests and threatening to bolt. Who do they think they're fooling? Have you listened to them and read their stuff the last few months? Have you seen the anti-Obama ads being run on tv by your local Republican talk radio affiliates? They all now have a monetary investment in seeing Barack Obama defeated. The last 2 months and probably this month,Republican donors have finally opened their wallets and checkbooks and started sending money to McCain, the RNC and con 527s and PACs. They now have a monetary investment in seeing Barack Obama defeated too.
If McCain chooses a pro-choice running mate, the rightwing commentariat and the evangelical right will huff and puff and thump their chests and threaten to bolt for a time. Then they'll find something in the NY Times,The Huffington Post,NBC,MSNBC,MoveOn,Daily Kos or someplace else to use as political cover and they will roll over and get back on board with McCain. They call pro-choice Dems "abortionists". They gonna call their own VP nominee that? Hardly.
Let's be honest. McCain got the GOP nod because the polls showed he had the best chance to beat Hillary as the primaries/caucuses drew closer. It's about winning, not about conservatism or ideology.
