Puzzles and Reading are not mutually exclusive
by The Anatomist
I think Mr. Rosenbaum makes an error in assuming that people who enjoy solving crosswords and sudoku puzzles are doing so at the expense of time that would otherwise be spent reading. I think in reality most people who do enjoy these sorts of logic puzzles are probably the same people who enjoy reading for pleasure. I can remember visiting my elderly neighbor when I was a teenager after mowing her lawn and seeing a stack of finished NYT Crosswords on her coffee table next to just about every biography of every person who ever lived. My point - reading and solving logic puzzles are two very different ways to exercise your mind and one does not supplant the other. Kudos to those people who can read Tolstoy on a bus or a subway, I'm going to stick with crosswords to fill my odd bits of useless time.

Ah but she was reading Biographies, which are basically just "This Guy's Life For Dummies." And as the humble author points out, "____ for Dummies" books don't count as reading.

Hundred bucks says people who do sudoku and crosswords read more than those who do not.
