I can't believe I have to explain this to a person who, I would guess, calls himself "conservative". A conservative person tends to tread carefully, especially when stepping near the Constitution. The FISA provides a procedure for obtaining surveillance. If the Act is insufficient, the Constitutional remedy is to amend it, not to ignore it. To ignore an Act of Congress involves trampling on the Constitution, the foundation of American government.
Alberto Gonzales was asked some questions about the program that supposedly involved ignoring the FISA. He gave non-answers and false answers. Just as you or I would have to give answers, truthful answers, to questions we would be asked in court, similarly the Attorney General must give truthful answers, or explain the relevant privilege that prevents him from being compelled to answer, when he is asked questions in a session of Congress. His repeated lies and refusal to answer questions are an affront to Congress that should enrage everyone who cares about the Constitution, regardless of party affiliation.
Regarding US Attorneys: They serve We The People at the pleasure of the President. They do not serve the President. The President may fire them for no reason at all, but this does not mean that he may fire them for any reason. For instance, he may not fire them in order to obstruct justice. He may not fire them for refusing to pursue bogus cases against Democrats, nor for pursuing real cases against Republicans.
We have a (relatively) unchanging Constitution in order that there be some continuity in our form of government throughout the ages. Surely you would scream bloody murder if a Democratic President committed a tenth of the Constitutional violations that this President's administration has. The relationship between the branches of government, and the standards of acceptable behavior from the President and the rest of government must not change with every election cycle, which is why crimes against the Constitution are so serious.
