Usain Bolt
by martinh

So Usain Bolt is now a bigger star than cricket could ever make him? Uh, don't think so, Try Googling "Brian Lara" or "Sir Garfield Sobers" to see how big a cricketer can be in the Caribbean. Or for a real global megastar, India's Sachin Tendulkar.

I respectfully disagree. After residing in some Commonwealth nations, I would say that the fawning press coverage given an international superstar (such as Usain Bolt now is) and a big local cricketer or 'footballer' (soccer player) is about the same. When you also consider the fact that the Olympic 100 meter champion and world record holder is a universal, and not local-sport-specific hero, I would estimate that Usain Bolt's potential endorsement deals and international superstardom would eclipse the most popular cricketeer's or footballer's. Love for "athetics" (track & field) may not be particularly deep, but it is certainly wide.

What is cricket and who are those people you're talking about?

Just kidding, but the title "World's fastest man" probably gets you more money (international sponsors) than "Jamaica's best cricketer"...

Here in Australia the best cricketer in the country might make $200,000 per year. Usain can make that now, just showing up at a track meet.
