What imbalance? It's 17-14
by LuxLawyer

I took a quick look at the swimming results because Larimore's post seemed odd to me. With all swimming except the 10K (an event as different from the pool swims as the marathon is from track) complete, the US men have won 17 medals and the women have won 14. So, Phelps-adjusted (whatever that means), I would think that the women have done at least as well as the guys this time. As far as 2004 goes, I don't know the exact numbers, but not only did that team have Phelps, but also the incomprehensibly great backstroker Peirsol (and note that both of those guys contribute to the medley).

The US women have done well. Not as well as Phelps, but well. Give them, and Phelps, and Speedo, a break.

And it wasn't like Speedo said, "Hey phelps, you're a man so here's a $1 million, don't share that with any of those pesky women."

For some people it is a crisis any time men outperform women. OMG! Something must be done!

Interesting that the author of the piece didn't also call out sponsers to give money to the men's gymnastics team, which did not perform nearly as well as the women.

Yeah, Phelps did well, better than anybody, male or female, period! And at every Olympics, the Press picks someone highly favored and makes them a celebrity. Phelps got it this time, he's even surpassing LeBron James and the Redeem Team. NOBODY has done what Phelps did, 8 gold medals in one Olympics, that is a one-of-a-kind event. It will be many years, if ever, before that record is broken. Most of those press-favored athletes don't do nearly as well. Remember Kim Zimeskel? No, because she was overshadowed by Shannon Miller, even though she was the press favorite at the time. If Phelps is really getting undue attention, blame it on the Press! But personally, I think we'll have to throw this year out of the comparisons and look for any such sexism at the next Olympics.
