Sorry this link is in a different language, but basically shows that the US media is generally reporting medals won, rather than the rest of the world which ranks the table by gold medals won.

Is our national pride really so fragile that we are seen as being unable to cope with being told that China is way ahead in numbers of gold medals. Did this bother us that much in the old USSR/East Germany days? They regularly used to top the table by a country mile.

my favorite ranking is one I saw ages ago and no one seems to be using it anymore: 3 points for Gold, 2 for silver, one for bronze.
