Huh? What makes it not a sport?

Clearly this guy has only played at barbeques and has no idea of the complexity, skill or athleticism involved in high level beach volleyball. Beach volleyball is a tough, downright exhausting sport, and it's a tribute to the skill level of these players that they make it look easy and graceful.

Beach volleyball, like any other team sport, has its own mannerisms and ways to express congratulation and team unity. Heck, I always consider the high fives to be one of the most important ways to keep the team focused on the game and in sync with each other.

Go watch basketball or football and you'll see the same behavior.

Better yet, get out onto an actual playing field...

(the cheerleaders, otoh, no idea what they are doing at the olympics...)

I had to leave the "not a sport" bit alone. That's a lose-lose argument whenever it's brought up.

it really is the argument of last resort when someone doesn't like a sport.

If you want to declare something "not a sport" it would seem to be a prerequisite to say something...ANYTHING...about the actual game itself.

Instead, we get the presence of cheerleaders and ass slapping as a QED that this isn't a sport. No doubt the NFL will be surprised to hear this...

At least Troy Patterson admits he's only given the matter superficial consideration. I suppose this makes him simply lazy rather than stupid, which might be considered the better of the two.

Whenever I hear stuff like this, or rage over a mistake by a gymnast, or any of the other criticisms of elite athletes I can't help but form a mental image in my mind. I see Troy sitting on his couch, downing a pint of ice cream while demeaning the atheltic ability of athletes in a sport where he would collapse in exhaustion within 5 minutes. It's really rather pitiful.

At least volleyball has an actual scoring system and they're not relying on judges to determine who won. And as long as you can understand the difference between "in" and "out" you have the rules pretty much covered. If a person was ever going to rant against volleyball, it would have been in the days prior to rally scoring, when you could watch 10 points and the score wouldn't change because they'd all be side-outs...but they even fixed that. It might be the perfect Olympic team sport: Quick matches, fun setting, plenty of action.
