I Just Couldn't Wait!

...To leave my comment, I mean...

My dad died on a motorcycle.

After working for 40 years at the same job, he was planning a post-retirement month-long motorcycle trip to Alaska, where he had served in the Navy. He retired in the month of May, but being the responsible man he was, he decided to spend June resurfacing the roof of the house, in the Arizona heat. He'd spent several years planning his journey, getting all the right equipment and marking his route on the huge map hanging on the wall. Finally on July 1st he left on his dream trip. He was struck and killed that very first day, three hours into the trip.

If it ain't a truck squishing you on the road, it's cancer, or a bad heart, or a maniac, or any of the other kabillion ways to die. Live while you have the chance, old age is not guaranteed.

I am so sorry to hear that, K. My cousin's death in 9-11 highlighted the fact that you have to live in the here and now, because you're not guaranteed tomorrow. I learned so much about him at his service, and it broke my heart because I realized that he was a better man than I knew, even though I had admired him.

My sympathies to you both!

I just lost my father in July. He was a young man by most standards (55), and left us kids with the knowledge that his only regrets are those things he relegated to "someday." He wasn't ready to go...there were too many "someday" things left to do.

My siblings and I just hope we get the time to do them all (it doesn't seem likely, we're a disaster-prone, cancer-prone bunch), for him. We promised we wouldn't wait for someday.
