the amount in the bank had been merely $79, instead of $79 billion, you can rest assured that carl levin would be braying just as loudly about "where did the money go"

Well, then, I guess it's not the "good news" Hitch is making it out to be.

I am glad that the Iriaqis are now generating oil revenue, and that there is some hope (however slim) that they will start pouring their own money into the coffers of U.S. contractors instead of continuing to rely on U.S. tax payers. I mean, the oil revenue was the whole reason for invadiing Iraq, wasn't it? Too bad the soldiers and very few of the Iraqis themselves stand to share in it, but policticians exist to spread the spoils of war amongst their friends and supporters, not the little people.
