Thinking Global - acting local
by K.Sandstrom

To rent video's via mail or video store? I choose to use my dollar to support fellow Oregonians. Hollywood Video has their corporate headquarters here in Wilsonville - employing who knows how many Oregonians... along with their local storefronts. How many Oregonians does Netflix employ? I have no idea...if any... but when considering the environmental effect - if every Oregonian rented from Hollywood, there would be job security for those folks. If every Oregonian rented from out of state - well then there would be an entirely different effect on our community.

So I vote by buying my cosmetics at Blush Beauty Bar, by supporting the local farmers market, my giving my contributions to local non-profits like Solv, Body Vox or Outside In - and yes, on the way to Zupans I stop by Hollywood Video and rent a few movies. Hope you will consider doing the same.

Hollywood Video does not appreciate your help

While buying local might be a good policy, Hollywood Video is a national company. If everyone followed your advise to keep their dollars at home, everyone in the other 49 states would shun Hollywood Video, the company would fold, and some of your fellow Oregonian's would be out of a job. Not to mention the Hollywood Video employees in those other 49 states.

See all the people you are hurting. Oregonians can be so selfish.

These kinds of things are just hard to calculate.

I'm not sure if it's acurate or how many people they employ but according to <link> there is a netflix distribution center in Salem, Oregon.

Also, Netflix uses the USPS to transport their DVDs. The post office provides jobs with good pay and benefits to their employees.

That seems a remarkably tribal rule of action to be proud of and to urge on others. I think of every dollar spent as a sort of vote, but prefer to vote for good products and efficient delivery of value rather than for support of my tribe.
