I still don't get it
by damon2
I continue to be confused with Slate's ongoing reviews of stoner movies; perhaps I'm wrong but based on experience it seems that these movies are made to be seen by individuals who identify with the main characters, young male stoners. I mean I loved Cheech and Chong movies when they came out, but now they don't seem anywere near as funny. Of course the "frame of mind" with which I'm watching them has hanged considerably now that I'm 53 instead of 18 or so. As I find it highly unlikely that this target audience is reading movie reviews on Slate, I just can't figure out who the writers are writing for, except perhaps themselves.

It is really quite odd that Slate reviews every Judd Apatow movie, considering their reading demographics (People who read Christopher Hitchens and Jack Shafer aren't the people most likely to watch films like Pineapple Express) and the fact that they doesn't publish many movie reviews. It seems like pointless mental masturbation to me as well.

By the way, I AM the target audience for this film (20 year-old college student who recreationally uses marijuana), and I consider Judd Apatow to be an untalented, formulaic one-trick pony. If you've seen one of his movies, you've seen them all.

It's late and I'm tired.

I saw Pineapple Express last night and it was worth more laughs than most comedies I've seen in the last couple years. I thought it was outrageously goofy fun, and I'm a 20-something female who has never smoked weed and enjoys a variety of comedies. The reviewer was right about James Franco stealing the show, too--hilarious.

I don't mind Apatow so much, but the popularity of Seth Rogan baffles the mind. I know people ten times funnier and twice as stoner teddy bear lovable-whatever he's supposed to be. He seems to me like the obnoxious, unfunny douchebag trying to invade my social circle by trying to be funny, but only succeeding in getting everyone's nerves.

AMEN. I am also a 20-year-old college student (althought I don't really smoke marijuana) and I don't really find Judd Apatow funny. I loved Superbad but I didn't really like Pineapple Express at all.

Okay, so I was wrong, seems that at least a portion of the demographic does read Slate after all. I guess that shouldn't surprise me too much as I enjoyed the NY Times as well as a Thai stick in my youth.

With a hugely popular online magazine like this, there will certainly be a decent chunk of younger readers, especially since:

-Younger people are more comfortable with the online medium

-The editorial slant here is somewhat liberal

-Much of the material is relatively lighthearted

Still, I'd be willing to bet that you are generally correct about the demographics here.

Umm, I read Slate everyday, I like Judd Apatow movies, I'm in my 20's, I read Christopher Hitchens and Jack Shafer...it makes perfect sense.
