The GOP has written this election off as a loss leader
by NightSwimmer

It will be almost impossible for the Republican party to win the White House in 2008. It doesn't matter which candidate is selected. I don't think that they really want to waste a good candidate on this election.

The strategy is to hand the mess off to a Democrat and go into attack mode immediately after the election in preparation for 2012. The Democratic President will be blamed for Mess-O-Potamia, the ruptured housing market bubble and the economic disaster yet to be realized by the current administration's record deficits.

I've been around long enough to have seen this happen before. I am cynical enough to believe that the American public will fall for it again. Hide and watch.

If the costs weren't so high, I

would be happy to let the Republicans have the White House in 2008. They made this mess and should clean it up. However, I have no confidence in them to do the cleaning. Our country is truly at risk, so it's back to the Dems. After all, traditionally the Republicans have screwed things up and the Dems have cleaned it up.

Yes.

And traditionally they have had to take the blame for the problems because they were the only ones willing to do anything to correct them.

You don't win elections in this country by speaking to the voters as if they were adults and telling them that we have problems to deal with that might require some sacrifice on their part. You win elections by shouting slogans like:

"We're number one!" and "Don't worry, be happy!"

I completely agree, but to really hurt the Republicans I'd like to see a 3rd party candidate such as Ron Paul out poll them due to the "war" and Democras take strong majorities in both houses then pass bills that wil make a difference then take their lumps.

Fred Thompson may be lazy but he my also be smart enough to stay away from this election.

Newt Gingrich is.

Election is over 15 months away

There nothing like a Democrat to screw up a sure thing.

A valid point Ronn,

Even with help from Diebold, it is hard to understand how a totally inept little fart like GWB could have won the last two elections.

Perhaps there is a possibility for the GOP to prevail once again? I just don't believe that they will sink much effort into it.

The Mud will run. The Repbulicians will go back to the "Swift Boat" technique. They will sling mud and find some organization that will attack a given position. Hannidy is already doing it with White Water, calling the Clintons murderers etc. Lapdogs like Hannidy, Boortz, O'Rilley, Coulder etc.state a lie over and over and their audiences believe them. Since all the right wing nut broadcasters get the same e-mails from a support group of the NRC, and they all say the same thing. Individuals that listen to these individuals are reinforced because they all say the same misinformation. Gobbels would be proud.

Hannidy still states that Saddam had WMD in Iraq and Al Qaeda in Iraq was responsible for the 9/11 disaster. It is amazing that an educated society like the US still believes this nonsense.

Doesn't say much for the listeners of these nuts. It appears that their sheep need someone to tell them how to think.

Hello Night Swimmer,

My late Uncle spent 20 years in the silent service. Hide and watch was one of his favorite terms, one that truly indicated what he did for so long though I am sure he really never thought of it that way. Were, or are, you possibly in the same branch?

By the way, I agree that who ever wins the next election is about to have a nightmare fall upon them the likes of which this nation has not seen in 70 years. It will make what happened 70 years ago pale in comparison. With a 10 trillion dollar debt we will not even be able to afford to help people with public works projects. Hope everyone will be able to eat their Chinese imports.

Jesus, we been hearing the story for over 25 years. The world-wide collapse.

And you expect this artificial boom to last forever. Much of the wealth created today and being leveraged is simply manipulated numbers and has nothing to do with the creation of anything tangible. The US cannot continue its indebted ways with the loss of our manufacturing base and depletion of our military, and the fact that communists who proclaim us to be their number 1 adversary holds more and more of our 10 trillion dollar debt one would tend to believe that the bills will come due sooner or later. Wages and pensions are shrinking so the consumer that has been fueling over 2/3rds of this last economic miracle is eventually going to have to say, "enough". When that happens hold on to your shirt because you might need it to help make your tent.

Small solace to say "I told you so", eh Nick?

But we told you so.

I have been trying to adress some of these issues for years. So many people with 'more education" than my self kept trying to explain that there was nothing wrong with having so much debt and sending our manufacturing base to a communsit country that it was not even funny.

Well I guess the old saying that common sense in not all that common is true.

The US has a $14Trillion economy, with a national debt of $10T. Is this an unacceptable debt level? Let us assume you are making $100k a year, and you owe the bank $70k, is this unacceptable? Most of the US debt are due to the spending on the Iraq war, which hopefully will come to an end.

The loss of manufacturing jobs to China indicates the US economy is more advanced than the Chinese one. If these jobs stay in the US, their products will cost the US consumers 3 to 5 times more than that produced by the Chinese. In other words the Chinese are providing cheap labour for the US consumers. Since the US unemployment rate is still relatively low (4-6 %), the people who used to work in those manufacturing jobs have gone onto some other higher paying jobs, such as health care and information services.

On the other hand, because of the creation of manufacturing jobs in China, now they have money to buy US goods such air planes and heavy machines. To me that looks like a win-win situation. Good for the Chinese who is improving their lives and good for the US who pay less for their goods and have more money for other things. This is called the globalisation of capitalism and free trade, done properly and fairly will benefit all mankind.
