Eating healthy takes a back seat to just getting enough to eat. And there's the appeal of fast food. It's quick. It's relatively inexpensive. And it fills you up. Cheaper food tends to have a higher caloric density than more expensive food.
Educating people is part of the answer, but it's not the only answer. Even if you educate people about what food is healthy and what's unhealthy, you still have the problem that after a long day at work, many working women don't have the time or energy to cook a meal, so that just means picking up McDonald's for the kids. Does education solve that? You know it's unhealthy, but you still buy it because it's a quick and inexpensive way to feed your family.
And as much as people want to praise Whole Foods, are they opening new stores in poor areas? No. Two Whole Foods stores have opened in my area, and both of them are in wealthy areas of town. I know, you can drive to Whole Foods, even if you live in a poor area... but many of them don't have cars!
