Who programmed a fraybot? Was that Geoff??? (before
by tartuffe

being kicked upstairs to practice inconsistent petty authoritarianism)

Actually, that doesn't seem quite right, but if not him, then I can't remember who it was.

Anyway, whoever it was missed a brilliant, Rovian projection coup de grace that's only recently been made obvious:

Have the bot accuse anyone and everyone of being a bot! -- no matter what they say -- in fact recite the same tired refrain completely ignoring and independent of any specifics of the post to which the bot's "responding"!

As in this archetypal example.

<light bulb> Or, wait! Maybe whoever that botmeister was DID "perfect" his bot with this feature! Maybe that explains the endless bot-spamming undoubtedly going on right this instant, even as I type this!

Would explain a lot, no?

I picture that particular bot sitting hunched over
by StandardDeviation
her keyboard, wearing a dingy terrycloth bathrobe,a virginia slim dangling indecorously from the corner of her mouth, squinting her eyes against the blue smoke trailing up her cheekbone and through her split ends and Toni wave.
Think you forgot
by tartuffe

the 9/10 empty bottle of Jack Daniels at her elbow. Otherwise, that portrait sounds about right.

It's bugging me, though, that I can't quite remember who actually did program a bot (or else wrote damn good imitations of one) -- or the bot's nic -- back in the Old Fray. I really do wish someone who remembers could confirm that, cuz it's gonna annoy me unless/until somebody does.

oh-so catty, girlie-men, don't you two have anything better to do than to set at your computers in your jammies and bunny slippers, hair done up in rollers, self-rightously gossiping about another poster?
Thanks.

I feel much less alone in the world now.

On the other hand (-gasp!): you can see us?

So you don't remember either? Well, thanks for
by tartuffe

playing, anyway!

I'm blanking, but wasn't it something along the lines of lovemachine?

I think it was Geoff.

I just love ..

your jammies with the frolicking little kittens and puppies printed on them!
Yes, something along those lines sounds right,
by tartuffe

though I don't think that ("lovemachine") was it.

(-blushing)

Thanks.

Gender-bending cuteness is the new masculine, you know.

I forgot actually.

Lunesta knows for sure (give her a ring) .... possibly it was something like "seductron" ?
seductotron rings a bell.
by StandardDeviation

Seductron! Yeah, I think that might have been it
by tartuffe

(or something very close).

Thanks!

go here...
by StandardDeviation
It was Geoff, I believe, as Seductotron.

But I have to disagree about the explanation for LAM's mass effluvia. Even a Rovian program-bot would be created with a substantive purpose---Help The GOP---however disreputable the means. For the umpteenth time (I'm amazed posters still bother to engage her on any merits whatsoever), LAM is a needy parasite who feeds alternately upon positive and negative vibes. Her snout senses that anti-Obama spam is currently best served to induce strong negative reactions from those here whom she most dislikes and hence wishes to bump up against. McCain/Obama/polls etc. are simply means to that end---I doubt she really cares one way or the other about the election itself. This could be a gardening site and she'd be talking trash with orchid afficionados if that was the closest route to a taste of a healthy human's blood. And as with Denny before her, her posting output and then open invective and mask-dropping buffoonery increases exponentially as her latest credibility half-life comes to an end, along with interest in or even notice of her existence. She's looks to be on the ragged edge of a hundred-posts-a-day jag or two. There's a momentary flash, a brief pause, then she lights another sparkler.
