Kooky Religious Beliefs
by Krytezer

Which of the following can be viewed as the most kooky religious belief:

A) The Mormon belief that all human beings can eventually turn into God

B) The Muslim belief that exploding yourself and others guarantees that 72 virgins will be awaiting you for a heavenly orgy

C) The Catholic belief that the literal body of Jesus Christ is transubstantiated into a bread wafer

D) The Pentecostal belief that speaking in gibberish is a sign of having been "filled with the Holy Spirit"

They're all kooky.

Organized religion is kooky. Belief in fairytales causes it.

"Kooky" is redundant.

They're all equally kooky.

But they are not all equally dangerous.

How about these...
by Doubter

The Bible is the literal word of God and contains zero mistakes.

That the Bible proves that evolution as a scientific theory of the creation of the species is really just a conspiracy by athiests.

The idea the the Bible proves that Big Bang as a scientific theory of the creation of the universe is really just a conspiracy by athiests.

And my favorite...that Christianity is the only true religion and every other person who believes differently from you will go to hell.

abolish all "beliefs" I say
by Hermes
and this problem evaporates
A couple of comments.

1. Yes. All of those beliefs are nuts......but I agree with hazy that they are not all dangerous nutty beliefs.

2. To say "abolish all beliefs" is an over simplification. You can't just abolish what someone believes in their heart.

3. I agree that the Bible is without error. But interpretation of the Bible is full of error (thus, some of the nutty beliefs of the first post...........and I could list many more).

I can't get on board with that.
by hazydavey

I'm in favor of imagining no religion - not abolishing religion.

I prefer Lennon to Lenin.

The bible is without error?

How do you reconcile taht premise with the multiple directly contradictory statements it contains?
Good choice...

Vladimir just didn't have the cheekbones to pull off those hipster eyeglasses...

;-)

"oversimplification" how?
by Hermes

that applies only after you add your twocents to the mix. I didn't write it with any hopes of accomplishing it, but rather as an obvious cure to the problem.

It's quite noticable you failed to address that part.

Would it cure the prob or not?

I didn't mention "religion"
by Hermes
nor do I think that any beliefs in a god are necessary to adopt the golden rule
Here's another kooky belief....
by Jen01

That God created everything (not just the earth.... but the "heavens and the earth"... the whole she-bang) in six twenty-four hour days! (and rested on the 7th 24 hour day).

I mean......anyone knows that after creating all that in just 6 days, he'd need way more than 24 hours to rest!

;-)

Excellent observation
by hazydavey

And supposedly Yoko was the cause of great disruption in the early Politburo....pissing off Stalin and Trotsky to no end.

:)

Hermes....... it would cure
by Jen01

the problem for sure...........but it's not practical since it can't be done.

Unfortunately the "fix" is not quite as simple as "abolishing beliefs"....... it would be great if it was that simple.

If we could just reduct things to the golden rule, lots of problems would be resolved. But we can't.
