Trichomonas can recur pretty easily. Women can be asymptomatic carriers for months at a time, and thus pass it back and forth between themselves and their partners, often before someone is symptomatic enough to be diagnosed. To treat it, both partners have to be treated at the same time. However, that can fail if they don't complete the antibiotics or have sex again before either of them are completely cured. There's plenty on CDC website as well--you can look it up.

Look, lots of men cheat, but given that the first doctor didn't suspect this was an STD (and his professional obligation is to her, not her husband), it seems reasonable to get another opinion and not jump to the conclusion that it was cheating.
