US Offshore Oil Drilling
by herkayle

Barack Obama and John McCain have made recent statements on US offshore oil drilling while on the US presidential campaign trail. Well, Offshore Drilling is a huge issue right now and rightly so. Between the
desire to deal with the economic mess that is being spurred by the price
of oil and the on-going longer-term concern of global warming, how do we
address all of this? Check out Obama and McCain in side-by-side videos
on clash/US Offshore Oil Drilling <link>
comparing their recent
comments on ANWR and offshore oil drilling. It is, if nothing else,
very interesting to hear their perspective.

What's interesting is McCain's take...

he says that we MUST drill off-shore of California, New Jersey, Florida, etc. for both our economic AND national security interests and the risk to the environment will be minimal....

but then he won't drill in ANWR?!??!??

Which automatically raises the DEBATE question ..."Senator, why, for the sake of economic and national security interests, are you willing to risk environmental damage to FLORIDA and CALIFORNIA and all the ocean-side states.....but want to protect northern Alaska?!?!??!?"

Good point to which I think there is no valid argument. I guess you can argue about how environmental damage in ANWAR would cause more long term damage but given that drilling on land is less risky I think it would come off as half baked.

I said it before and this is one more case where these guys are not being the least bit upfront about pretty much everything. It angers me that they treat us as if we are too stupid to understand.

More drilling for oil is not going to solve our problem. It will make for good sound bites and provide the masses with some red meat to hang in their cellars though. Drilling off California will never happen. Destroying the Arctic so we can send oil to Japan is not going to happen either.
