The John Glenn speech is neither impromptu nor recent, but apparently did actually happen -- about 30 years back, when being a war hero didn't carry quite the same jingoistic weight, post-Vietnam. Not that it has anything to do with Iraq; the spam email just makes it look that way.

As I suspected -- only the last portion had anything to do with anything John Glen ever said, while the post attributes it all to him.

Well, I KNEW that it wouldn't be 100% accurate...and it wasn't. As I said, we've seen a lot of this chumming around....right-wing e-mails posted as "this is what _____ said, you dumb libs, argue with him/her".

Maureen Dowd's supposed "column on Obama's fund-raising"....which never existed.

"Lincoln on 'don't tear down the rich man to build up the poor man'"...which turned out to be somebody completely different in the late 1930s who HAD discussed Lincoln, but they weren't Lincoln's quotes.

George Carlin supposedly wanting to "send illegal immigrants to Iraq"...which was totally false, especially given Carlin's left-wing politics.

I think it reflects the collapsing of the Hard Right....they're so desperate now (in a time of 28% Bush approvals and McCain trying, off and on, to distance himself from them) to find SOMETHING they can hang their ideological hats on.
