When is it okay to tell rape jokes?
by Loree

When your name is John McCain. When asked about telling a joke about a woman being raped by a gorilla, several years ago, his campaign people were quick to defend him with this jewel............'That's just McCain being McCain, and shows how authenic he is!'

Oh YEAH?! Well, who needs that kind of authenticity?!

The guy is a joke that just keeps on giving. He's now giving speeches claiming to be all for equal pay for equal work but as Rachel Maddow siad (plus his voting record), he's voted against it everytime it's come up.

He's a walking contradiction.

When you're George Carlin, or maybe Richard Pryor, then it might be OK to tell a rape joke--at least it might be a bit funny.

McCain isn't funny. His 'Bomb, bomb Iran' wasn't funny, either. I bet McCain is the kind of guy who thinks that a woman getting raped ought to lie back and enjoy it, as she can't do anything about it. That's what they teach the guys in the Navy.

"...a woman getting raped ought to lie back and enjoy it, as she can't do anything about it. That's what they teach the guys in the Navy."

Odd. I was in the Navy 20 years and was never taught that.

Any other broad, sweeping inacurate claims you would like to make? Or you content just to denigrate an entire organization of men and women who's mission it is to defend your liberty with their lives?

He has never given women the respect nor the credit they are due, and if anyone things that has changed, they had better rethink it.

McCain would never make it as a comedian, that's for sure.

In fact, I don't think he has a sense of humor AT all. But that's just my opinion, but I'm sticking to it:-)

They may get away with it with some parts of the audience. But I guarantee that the part that has actually BEEN raped wouldn't find the jokes funny.

I must say that if you're a rape victim, and you want to tell a joke about it, you've got every right. Just as Richard Pryor and other black comedians have made a fortune off of telling jokes on their own race.

However, the joke in Dow's thread below, and some others I've read recently are out of line particularly when their disguised as topical...like the one from Dow that MaryAnne posted the other day and then got all indignant because some of us took it seriously.

"That's what they teach the guys in the Navy."

I plead guilty to hyperbole. It should have read, "That's what some teach the guys in the Navy". Armed forces in general look on rape differently that civilians. Remember that incident in Okinawa which led--after numerous such rapes of juveniles--to the commander's resignation? He claimed that the perps didn't have access to professionals, and so went and raped 14 year old girls. Finally, it was no longer policitically correct. This was less than 10 years ago. McCain left the service decades ago when rape was a substitute for paid sex.

Between his disgusting jokes (including one ridiculing Chelsea Clinton's looks back when she was still a child) and the reports of his temper tantrums, it's clear the guy just isn't a good human being. He lacks moral fiber, and I don't want someone like that in the White House.
