re Brow-beaten Book Clubber
by marcparis

Prudie's advice is fine. Or you could just all move to a new city, without telling the boor (or the friend who made the mistake of inviting her to join you).

Send the woman to France. Over here people love arguing for the sake of arguing.

The brow-beater should be summarily kicked out of the club. People do change, but only very slowly, and only from within. It simply isn't going to work to tell the brow-beater to change. She'll try to be a little more agreeable and perhaps a little quieter, but she won't be able to refrain from playing devil's advocate or exhibiting her exasperation. She thinks she's right, and she thinks the point of the book club is sharp debate.

It's not going to make anybody happy to try to accommodate her, and anyhow, the founding club-members who no longer attend because of her have already made up their minds about her. Prudie is wrong about this one.
