How does it read for you?
by Fernando

"American Airlines is the worst airline in the world. I've been saying that repeatedly since early April, when my girlfriend and I took a short vacation in the US and returned happy with our stay but traumatized by the air travel. So Tuesday, when a American Airlines MD80 on an inbound domestic route skidded off the La Guardia airport runway, tried to take off again, and crashed into a cargo building owned by the same carrier, exploding on impact and incinerating nearly 200 people, I felt angrily (and OK, smugly) justified in my condemnation."

Does it sound nice? Does it soud appropriate? Would it ever be published in Slate?

No - it would never be published in Slate. Because it isn't true.

Good Point and exactly what I said in my first Post. Whoever responded to your post did the typical pick and choose what they answer and ignores the rest.

As a Captain for a major airline that routinely flies into South America I was very disgusted and dismayed by the crassness and disrespectful article you wrote. I took the time to find out a little bit about you before writing and suffice it to say you epitomize all that is rotten with sensational journalism and your ilk. You write to get an effect without so much as taking into account whom it might hurt while utilizing the pseudo altar of authority to appear to have some credence.

You are so like the hundreds of passengers who feel that because they have ridden in the back for so many miles that somehow you are now qualified to speak about the internals and pass judgment on the many professionals that make an airline run. Safe from behind your keyboard you criticize, pass judgment, without once expressing sympathy, remorse or any common human decency for the suffering of those families. I am quite sure that had this been a US carrier you would not have dared written as you did for fear of certain reprisals. How dare you callously admit to being smug when so many lives were lost. What makes it even worse yet is the manner in which you reply to those who have written to you. This accident could have happened to anyone anywhere. You need to educate yourself on all of the accidents that have happened right here in the USA before taking on any position of authority. Typical American thinking that the world is run like ours is and is somehow subject to that line. Go live among them and learn.

I have read your article numerous times and with each reading become more incensed with what you use as qualifiers. How does standing in line, or being delayed have any bearing on anything? It is quite obvious that you join the ranks of the many that complain because of delays because the world is not subject to your demands. Then you white knuckle at every bump and complain about the ride and finally the landing. Wish that I could just ignore the weather, maintenance, and other issues and take you for a real ride void of all the safeguards put there at the cost of many many lives. Sorry that I can’t but I have a family to come home to and like it or not am responsible for all those lives riding with me. Perhaps you should become a pilot, mechanic, or ATC controller and when you are done doing that come back and write this article again. Or better still why not go down to Brazil and make your stand there far from the safety of your stylish office. You are a disgrace and you should be ashamed on many fronts. Go, fly there and share your words of comfort to the families I am sure you will last the night.

Would that it were still the days of old when you could tar and feather then run a person out of town on a rail. But those are much too good for you. I am forwarding this letter and your article to the many real news agencies as well as the CEOS of the airlines including TAM and finally to MSN, shame on them and shame on you. You can ignore this post but you will be hard pressed to ignore the forthcoming wave heading your way.

Welcome Aboard!

Please Read,

I am writing this to as many posts as I can in order to gather support to come against the author as well as all those who allowed this to be posted. I encourage you to contact as many reputable news agencies and direct them to this article as well as the replies. Write to the Washington Post the owner of the SLATE and also finally to the Brazilian government. Perhaps the combined effort will make someone stand up and listen. As a Captain for many years I am used to the media getting all the facts wrong simply because they cannot wait for the professionals to have time to examine all the evidence. This is not about that it is about one writer using the very wide reach of MSN and the Washington Post to disgrace the memories of so many lost. Please do not let this die in the background. Pass it on.
