The "Right to have babies?"
by donjohn5
Suddenly, the Monty Python sketch in "The Life of Brian" is no longer funny; just ironic.

Well, if you'll recall, the problem they bring up is that he doesn't have a uterus. "Where is the fetus going to gestate? Are you going to keep it in a box?"

Well, this guy has a uterus. Amongst other things. And unlike many other people, here, I'm not going to decide that he gave up the right to use it when he became just too, too weird.

Hey, I have no problem with the guy deciding to make use of his uterus. My only problem is the "Miraculous Pregnant Man Gives Birth!!" Oprah crap.

He is a guy who was a woman; he is transitioning into a man. Good on him. He decided to hold off on the hysterectomy and genital surgery, so he could gestate and give birth through his vagina in the usual fashion. No miracles there; he grew that uterus and vagina himself, and just because he has a beard and a flat chest does not make the preexisting condition of having female gonads a miracle.

If the tattooed lizard lady from the circus had a baby instead of laying an egg, no one would be astonished.

I wish this guy would just shut up about his miracle pregnancy, and go get to the very important duties of being a husband and father. We don't want to hear about your elongated clitoris; that is your wife's buisness. Go change some diapers already.

No argument there. The media is clearly not ready to cover such a topic maturely (of course, most of the public is equally unable to think about the topic maturely, too.) If this guy is encouraging the coverage - and I imagine he is - I can understand the impulse to educate but I think he's doing more harm than good.

All I was saying is that the "Life of Brian" sketch about the right to have babies isn't really similar at all, whatsoever. That was about the right of uterus-less men to have babies. This isn't. And also, there are an awful lot of people who do believe it is their business what this guy does with his.

Unfortunately, my cynical brain wants to know: is he really trying to educate? I think he wants a book deal and some fame as much as he wants acceptance and hugs.

If he wanted people not to hassle him about his reproductive choices, he would not have gone on national TV. Most people get hassled about their baby-making equipment at one point or another. I had an abortion when I was a teenager; hassling assholes with gruesome signs outside the clinic. Now, I am married, and my big Irish family can't accept that I don't want to spend my youth pumping out kids.

So, having dealt first-hand with the Pro-Life "babykiller!!!" crowd, I have some sympathy for the guy's hassles. Not a lot, because I would not be fool enough to go on TV and tell the world "hi, I'm Freki O'Shewolf, I live in **** county, and I just had an abortion!"

That would get me death threats and overbearing religious wackos. Duh.

What happens when the scientists use the stem cells to manufacture a uterus?
