anne v dorothy
by Ruth Berman
Meghan O'Rourke's article about Anne of Green Gables compares Anne's devotion to the power of imagination unfavorably to L. Frank Baum's Dorothy, who insists that she wants to go home. The article alludes to the line, "there's no place like home." That's not Baum, though -- it's the 1939 movie. Baum's Dorothy goes home in "the Wizard of Oz," but doesn't claim it as her fate. In fact, in following Oz boos, she visits Oz again, and finally moves there to stay when the bank forecloses on the mortgage (a subprime loan, evidently).
