Doctors used to "swimming in a sea of death" (to remind you of the title of David Rieff´s uncomfortable book on the death of his mother Susan Sontag) must be seen not as more clearsighted than the rest of us because of what they see but rather the contrary,in various degrees terribly badly affected by what they see. The subject is clearly taboo as there are no books on the subject.
