Dear Margo Letter about Murder in House
by DORFMONT
California real estate regulations require that any prospective buyer be informed of the crime in writing and sign a receipt for the disclosure. If the property is in CA I'm sure the current owner is aware of what happened there.
A question and a comment.

Did Prudie get caught using a letter from another column again?

Most state real estate regulations would require disclosure of a traumatic event that happened in a house; not just a brutal murder.

Sometimes people will not buy houses with violent histories and they must be let go at a lower price. Just speculating, but this person may be delighted that he could buy any home.

Just so you know ... Margo left us for Yahoo or something. The DP column is being written by Emily Yofee now (or one of her interns).

Even in Australia there is a disclosure rule.

About 5 years ago a teen killed his entire family in their home (yes he is still in prison). Their house was sold a little over a year ago and the real estate agent failed to disclose this. The buyers sued the agent and the seller for enough to pay off the mortgage and had the building torn down. All because they had failed to disclose the violent history of the house.

Some doubt here about the Dear Margo reference. I think it was for information, not a direct reference to the letter her in DP.

I don't think disclosure is the issue: there is no indication that the friend who has bought the house doesn't know the story. It's just that the LW (or the BF) is being silly about the fact that someone would actually dare buy this place of horror that must become the inviolate perpetual shrine to his 3rd grade teacher.

I agree with marcparis,

The boyfriend is said to love the teacher, and would probably be disgusted and angry no matter who bought it.

Yes, it's creepy the friend bought the house, but I think that it can be just a deep need of the friend to have a home, and the deceased's family not wanting to hang onto a home filled with painful memories of a loved one's murder.

She may want to question her bf's extreme feelings and behavior about the house.
