Can you please not be so intentionally stupid, just once in your life? McCain spent five years as a POW, so when he came home, he was a very well-known person. Name recognition is a big part of the battle, and I'm sure the people running the Republican party at the time were well aware of the succes they could have by running a candidate with high name recognition.

Name recognition can be useful, but it can hurt you, too (e.g., Hillary). Sometimes a fresh face works, as it has done for Obama.
