Yet another lefty academic explaining to other lefties why the Democrat's (and by extension Obama's) patriotism problem isn't their responsibiliy.
First you focus on the mendacious Republicans. It's all their fault! We're victims! Next you stroke yourself for being, oh, too "high minded," too "subtle" for the rest of us mouth breathers to "appreciate" and "grasp."
Um, shove it.
Democrats are saddled with a patriotism problem that has dogged them for nearly 40 years. It keeps them from winning elections they might otherwise win. Sure, Republicans have ruthlessly and sometimes dishonestly exploited this weakness. But the weakness itself is REAL and was not created by the right.
Patriotism wasn't forcibly taken by the right - it was left lying on the table by the left when they discovered that patriotism wasn't always the best of things and tried to redefine it in their own terms.
Stop focusing on what the Republicans said. Stop floating your thinly veiled contempt for citizens with a different point of view. Ask yourself this: How Do I Fix This?
Dems, It's YOUR problem. Why is it your problem? Because you want power and you need votes. Most people don't think patriotism means what you think it means. Eight years of republican douchebaggery and dems STILL might lose this election because of a patriotism issue.
If you want to win, then get thyself to the patriotic gym! I don't know, try a low-Che' diet, maybe send a DVD player to some Lance Corporal in Iraq and ask him why winning is important. Learn to bass fish and actually spend a couple weeks in Alabama trying to understand what people love so much about this country. Whatever works - anything - just stop blaming everyone else for your problem.
